EndNote

EndNote is commercially available reference management software, available to any Montclair State student, staff, or faculty member. The full EndNote software can be downloaded at the following link (note that there are both Mac and Windows versions):

Before chosing a reference manager, note that your department may have a preference for one program or another. While citation data can be transferred between programs, notes and annotations may be lost in the process.

Step 1: Install EndNote

EndNote is preinstalled on most university-owned machines. For your personal device, you can download and install EndNote from the software repository on the OIT homepage. Be sure to extract the installation files from the .zip folder before running the installation. The product key is included in the download file.

Step 2: Sync with EndNote Web

To sync your references between EndNote and EndNote Web, and to have an online back up of your references, you'll need to have an EndNote Web account. Click here for instructions on setting up Endnote Web.

Step 3: Install Microsoft Word plugin, "Cite While You Write"

The Microsoft Word plugin should have installed automatically during the EndNote installation process, and will show up as its own toolbar on the Microsoft Word menu. If it's not visible, you can install the plugin manually.

There are several different ways you can add references to EndNote.

1. Export EndNote citation files from a library database, publisher's website, or Google Scholar. Most databases will allow you to export citation files in a variety of formats, including .RIS

2. Import PDF files to EndNote. EndNote will look for metadata within the PDF file and use that to generate your citations.

3. Install the "Capture Reference" bookmarklet into your browser. This tool will help collect metadata as you browse the internet or databases.

For specific instructions on how to import citations into EndNote, see the FAQ here:

The default installation of EndNote provides over 200 different citation style formats, but there are many more available on the EndNote website. You can also check the website of the journal you're submitting to, or that of your field's professional associations for style files. EndNote styles come in an .ens file format.
