Teaching to Transgress, displayed in Alexander Kasser Theater Cases from September 17-December 15, 2024 and featuring the artwork of Na’Ye Perez, explores themes of community, presence, shared experiences, identity, and accessibility. Perez’s antidisciplinary practice spans painting, drawing, printmaking, performance, and socially engaged art, transcending traditional academic boundaries to present innovative frameworks and methods. Central to Perez's work is the concept of the "Black Presence," which is intricately tied to community, experiences, objects and materials left behind, memory, and the embodiment of collective will. His art is a reflection of his personal journey through various communities. This series tells stories of grief, joy, belonging and community through imagery and socially engaged practice. Perez’s work often uses day to day activities and objects to serve as catalysts for visceral experiences of the “Black Presence.”
