Country Studies

Finding Country Studies

The CIA World Factbook is a good general resource for basic information about countries.
Economics: Look in this section for information about industries and GDP.

ABI/Inform and Business Source Complete are business databases that in addition to scholarly business literature, contain reports about countries, their politics and economics, not to mention Country Risk Reports.
     Search for: Country Risk Report, Country Report or Political Risk
     Ex: "risk report"; and Uruguay

Industry Statistics for most countries are published by the United Nations.

Smaller Areas: State, County, City & Zipcode

To Find the Primary Industries:

  1. American FactFinder (below) will allow you to look up a state, county, city or zip code.
  2. Business and Industry: Select this from the menu on the left side of the screen and then look under Economic Census for the Economy-Wide Key Statistics or County Wide Business Patterns.
  3. Sort the Results: Click on Modify Table to access the sorting tools. The results can be sorted according to the number of employees, receipts, payroll or number of establishments for each industry.

To Find Companies in an Area:

  1. Reference Solutions (below) Use this directory if you need to identify the companies an area. It's by far the largest database of business contact info that I know of on the market and searches can be customized many different ways including Zip Code, county, city, metropolitan area, NAICS, SIC, etc., The list goes on ...
